Somewhere USA - July, 2021

In the middle of the street she kicked the ball hard as she could
It arched up, bounced off a car’s hood, and landed in the neighbor’s yard

The neighbor happened to see it and wagged her finger “Get out of the street!”

She huffed “What are you doing?” and “Where’s your parents?”
The girl didn’t know, she was left all alone—her brother in his bedroom with his entertainment

In the middle of July the sun’s set to shining and the air as warm as lightning
The angry lady shook her head, got in her car, and turned the key—off she zoomed

The girl stood among the still surroundings—angry zooming the only sound

A bird fluttered and a lizard scattered, and the girl retrieved her ball
She bounced it three times then set her eyes on her own house

That window there was hers
Above the garage and to the very right

With no one to watch her, she kicked as hard as she could
